The University of Liverpool, Active Learning Labs

Background

The Engineering Department was enthusiastic about the idea of illuminating the 826 glass panel façade to the building. The Lab is lit with hundreds of LEDs and can be seen as far away as Wirral.

Problem

The new roof area was to be covered with nearly a hundred concrete plinths that supported the track to the window cleaner’s cradle, along with many other roof protrusions. The walls were also to have hundreds of angle brackets, penetrating through the wall off the steel work to support the glass rain screen cladding which was illuminated at night.

Solution

Holloway Cook Associates installed a new liquid applied waterproofing system that could efficiently protect the building and be easily applied to the numerous details on the walls and roof area.

Liverpool Community College, Learning Exchange

Background

Liverpool Community College is the only college of further education in Liverpool, Merseyside. It was established in 1992 by the amalgamation of all the further education colleges in Liverpool and was formerly known as the "City of Liverpool Community College".

Problem

Liverpool Community College is a new build project, to which Holloway Cook have supplied the solution.

Solution

Holloway Cook Associates were involved in the design and installation of the various different types of roof areas on this £35million state of the art modern building; consisting of external plant rooms, refectory and play areas for the creche.

The University of Liverpool, Department of Engineering

Background

The Department of Engineering is a centre of excellence for engineering research and has a well-deserved reputation for its superb experimental facilities.

Problem

The mastic asphalt membrane to the roof areas had come to the end of their serviceable life and was allowing water ingress into the property.

Solution

Holloway Cook Associates refurbished the roof area without the need to strip off the existing membrane utilising a liquid applied membrane that was ideal for detailing around the numerous guardrail protrusions.

Broughton Hall School

Background

Broughton Hall was built in 1860 for Gustavus Schaube a prominent Liverpool merchant. Schaube helped finance the Oceanic Steam Navigation Company, which latterly became the White Star Line and then the Cunard White Star. White Star line would go on to create its famous ship the Titanic. Broughton Hall school was later founded in 1928 under the Trusteeship of the sisters of mercy.

Problem

The corridors to the courtyard building were cold and leaked every time it rained. The felt membrane to the roof areas had now come to the end of its serviceable life.

Solution

Holloway Cook Associates refurbished the roof area without the need to strip off the existing membrane. A new insulated system liquid applied membrane was installed in term time with no distribution to the staff or pupils.

The University of Liverpool, Donnan Labs

Background

The Department of Chemistry at the University of Liverpool is a leading centre for teaching and research in the U.K. ranked 6th in the Guardian Good University Guide 2008.

Problem

The University was to undertake a massive internal refurbishment of the laboratories. The felt roofs had come to the end of their serviceable life and were leaking in numerous areas.

Solution

Holloway Cook Associates undertook a thermographic survey to establish the areas of wet and defective areas of insulation. These areas were stripped out and replaced followed by retrofitting a liquid applied reinforced polyurethane membrane which was also installed to the internal parapet walls and coping stones.

Cunard Building, Pier Head, Liverpool

Background

The Cunard Building in Liverpool is the last of the “Three Graces”, with construction taking three years to complete during World War I. The building stands on the Pier Head and was the centre of Britain’s cruise ship industry for many years.

Problem

The rendered walls to the offices on the roof area were exposed to the high wind and rain from the Mersey. Small cracks in the rendering were allowing water to ingress into the property.

Solution

Holloway Cook Associates installed a high performance fully reinforced water-based polyurethane coating that can withstand thermal and structural movement.

Peel Group,Quay West

Background

The Peel Group (formerly Peel Holdings and Peel Mills) is a diversified real estate, transport and infrastructure investment company in the United Kingdom. It has assets owned and under management approaching £6 billion. The group headquarters are at the Trafford Centre, Manchester.

Problem

The mastic asphalt balconies were covered with astro turf to provide an aesthetic no slip surface. The mastic asphalt beneath the turf was starting to fail and was coming to the end of its life.

Solution

Holloway Cook Associates stripped off the astro turf and retrofitted the defective areas with a liquid applied hard wearing non slip balcony walkway system

Preston Super Bikes

Background

Preston Superbike Ltd's showroom is one of the Northwest's Premier motorcycle dealerships supplying top end quality new and used stock sourced from within the UK and also from overseas.

Problem

The mastic asphalt roof areas were now starting to split and crack with old age, signs of staining and water ingress were appearing within the show room.

Solution

Holloway Cook Associates installed a new elastomeric felt system incorporating a free standing permanent edge protection system.

UK Land & Property, Exchange Flags

Background

Exchange Flags was the site of the 18th century Liverpool Cotton Exchange and insurance and shipping businesses. These Grade II Listed buildings surround the open piazza on three sides and were erected in 1863. The most familiar feature of Exchange Flags is the Nelson monument, erected by public subscription in 1813. Local tales have it that the chained figures represent slaves, but they were in fact prisoners of war from some of Nelson’s battles. At one time you had to be invited to walk on the flags, which form a square behind the Town Hall.

Problem

The building was recently refurbished and the new tenants, such as the MOD, placed long term leases. Part of the lease agreement stipulated that the roof areas be refurbished equivalent in guarantee to the term of the lease.

Solution

Holloway Cook Associates installed a new liquid applied waterproofing system directly onto the tired mastic asphalt roof surfaces and perimeter parapet walls which mimicked the appearance of new asphalt.

No 1 Tithebarn Street, Liverpool

Background

No.1 Tithebarn occupies a prime location at the junction of Old Hall Street and Tithebarn Street at the heart of Liverpool's Business District.

Problem

The existing original mastic asphalt flat roof had served its time but was still a stable base for an overlay.

Solution

Holloway Cook Associates retrofitted the roof area utilising a single ply TPO  membrane.

Liverpool Housing Trust, Castlefields Estate

Background

Liverpool Housing Trust (LHT) is part of the Symphony Housing Group and has been providing homes on Merseyside since 1965. LHT now owns almost 10,000 homes across Merseyside.

Problem

Three large tenement blocks on the Castlefields Estate runcorn had been refurbished and unfortunately the built up system had failed within the guarantee period.

Solution

Holloway Cook Associates refurbished the defective roof areas utilising a completely cold applied built up roofing system incorporating a liquid applied membrane.

Heathlands Village Rest Home

Background

Heathlands Village is a large care complex situated on the edge of the Manchester suburb of Prestwich in Bury.

Problem

The Hospital wing had recently been refurbished internally and the felted flat roof areas were starting to fail. The outside of the building was also looking tired; splits and cracks in the rendering were starting to appear.

Solution

Holloway Cook Associates retrofitted both the walls and roof areas utilising a liquid applied polyurethane membrane.

Portside House, Duke Street, Liverpool

Background

Portside House is a bold new development in the heart of the Ropewalks district of Liverpool. With the vast regeneration work in the Ropewalks area, the Duke Street area has become a focal point of quality bars, shops and restaurants.

Problem

Even though the building was a new build project, the timber decking to the communal and private balconies had been mechanically fixed through the substrate causing the balconies to leak.

Solution

Holloway Cook Associates stripped off the timber decking and retrofitted the leaking areas with a liquid applied hard wearing non slip balcony walkway system.

Wirral Partnership Homes, Hoole Road Shops

Background

With approximately 12,400 properties, Wirral Partnership Homes is the largest registered provider of affordable housing in the Wirral area. It is also a socially responsible, not-for-profit organisation.

Problem

The mastic asphalt communal walkways and private garden terraces belonging to the domestic residences above Hoole Road shops were in need of refurbishment. They had undergone numerous patch repairs but a more long term solution was now sought.

Solution

Holloway Cook Associates repaired the damaged mastic asphalt communal walkways and private garden terraces and retrofitted the membrane with a liquid applied hard wearing non slip balcony walkway system.

Westcliffe Road, Southport

Background

11 Westcliffe Road is a large detached Victorian property that has been subdivided into several individual flats.

 

Problem

The tiled mastic asphalt entrance balcony to the flats was slippy to walk on and was leaking into an apartment below.

Solution

Holloway Cook Associates Ltd refurbished the entrance balcony walkway by removing the cracked and damaged slippy walkway tiles and installing a decorative liquid applied hard wearing non slip balcony walkway system.

Knowsley Borough Council, Huyton Library

Background

Knowsley Library Service offers access to a wide range of resources, talking books and videos at each of its libraries. In addition to the 7 library buildings in the Borough, Housebound and Mobile Library Services are provided for residents Knowsley.

Problem

The standing seam roof area and metal gutter sections had unfortunately not been water tight from when the building was completed.

Solution

Holloway Cook Associates retrofitted the roof area including the gutter sections utilising with an EPDM rubber membrane. The voids between the ribs to the cladding panels were bridged with a dense insulation board.

St Helens Council, Eccleston library

Background

St Helens Library Service provides books to suit all ages and reading tastes. Many adult and children's books are also available as Talking Books on cassette.

Problem

The felt membrane roof covering and the rooflights structures through longevity had served their time and were now in a condition that needed to be refurbished.

Solution

Holloway Cook Associates installed a new built up cold applied insulated liquid membrane roof system incorporating new structural Rooflights.

Halton Borough Council, Upton Community Sports Centre

Background

Halton Borough Council has a number of community centres and facilities for residents to book and use. This particular venue is used for social activities for older people, playgroups, carers and tots, youth club, lifelong learning courses and amongst other services.

Problem

The profiled metal roof area over the main hall had been leaking for some period of time. Attempts had been made to seal isolated areas, unfortunately with no success. Groups could not use the hall for sports activities following wet weather conditions

Solution

Holloway Cook Associates installed a new liquid applied waterproofing system specifically designed to encapsulate the existing metal roof sheets and roof protrusions.

St Margaret’s Church, Anfield

Background

The present St. Margaret's Church was opened in 1965 and replaced the original 1875 building that was destroyed in a fire.

Problem

The copper roof had served its purpose for nearly fifty years, however, it was now coming to the end of its serviceable life and starting to leak. To replace the copper with new would have been an astronomical cost.

Solution

Holloway Cook Associates were able to refurbish the copper roof maintaining its appearance by installing a copper green polyurethane membrane extending the life of the roof for many years to come.

Cargill Silos, Seaforth

Background

Cargill was established in the UK in 1955 and now employs over 3,000 people in 19 locations. Cargill’s soybean crush and refinery based in Seaforth, Liverpool has been operating since 1986 and has around 50 employees. The crush plant produces high protein soybean meal, soya hulls, crude soya oil and crude lecithin.

Problem

The Mastic Asphalt membrane covering the top of the silos after receiving numerous repairs over numerous years were now at a stage where they needed to be refurbished.

Solution

Holloway Cook Associates refurbished the roof areas, incorporating a new tapered screed, liquid applied membrane and new perimeter edge trim. The permanent edge protection and wall cladding were also replaced without the need for any temporary access scaffolding and roof edge protection. All the work was undertaken by our abseil rope access operatives saving the Client thousands in scaffolding costs.

Sheil Park Family Health Clinic, Liverpool PCT

Background

Liverpool Primary Care Trust brings together services offered by GP's, Community Nurses, Practice Nurses, other community services and other agencies dealing with health matters across the city.

Problem

Both the block work and stone masonry walls to the Clinic were allowing water to penetrate the property.

Solution

Holloway Cook Associates refurbished the block work using a polymer modified render that was then encapsulated with a polyurethane coating, the masonry was cleaned and a clear anti carbonation silicone coating was applied.
